Its been two years since a devastating earthquake rocked Haiti. Relief efforts continue and in my need for tweed (see previous post) I stumbled upon a fashionable way to lend a hand while fashioning Donegal designs.

Bikes for Haiti is partnering with the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in the area’s first annual Tweed Ride as part of the Fibrefest.

Tweed Rides have been popping up across the US, Australia since the first pedal was pushed in London in 2009. Riders clad in tweed cycle a short tour of their fair city and raise money for charity.

There's gads going on in 2012 to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Fashion and Art are forefront of the London scene.

“Ballgowns, British Glamour Since 1950″ is a must see for me this spring at London's V & A opening May 19th and running through the beginning of 2013. The museum is celebrating with the opening of its newly renovated Fashion Galleries and an exhibition of historic haute couture gowns.

The Cinderella of the eco couture world is arguably self proclaimed alchemist and design dynamo Ryan Jude Novelline. His inspired eco couture designs have been nothing short of jaw-dropping.

The Golden Book Gown, constructed entirely out of recycled children’s books.

The paper skirt is comprised entirely of the original book illustrations sewn together with metallic gold thread, and the bodice is made from the books’ foil spines backed by tape adhesive. Ryan's challenges, "Can the stories of our past become part of a sustainable future?"

The Q. Victoria Dress is embellished with 100 royal, gold-backed topaz and aquamarine Swarovski crystals. His vision is to tell a story of the prosperous Victorian era of Great Britain under the reign of Queen Victoria with the darker underlying tale of the Queen’s tragic personal life, depression, and assassination attempts.

Thearchitecture matches in whimsy and modernity.

Designed by Delft alumni Rancine Houbenwhose believes that “Architecture must appeal to all the senses and is never a(purely) intellectual, conceptual or a visual consideration alone.”

The library is a building of glass and grass. Rising up fromthe earth like a wave, the University swells with glass and sunlight and aninterior eddy of spiraling levels where thousands of study spaces are used by more than three thousand students eachday.

Dale of Norway

Wool is naturally insulating fiber. It traps air to keep you warm while moisture escapes keeping the user dry and comfortable. Quality wool does not itch and comes in Norwegian and merino varieties. Dale of Norway have been crafting natural wool knitwear since 1879.

The designs are still produced in the village of Dale, about 40 minutes outside of Bergen, by third and fourth generation knitters and craftsmen.The detailing: remarkable!

I'll be pulling out my Sweaters, woolen leggings and socks and searching out some snow play. Dale anyone?

OK so calcium from milk is great for our bones, but lately runways and celebs have been lapping up milk derived fashion as the next micro trend.

One designer hopping on the milk wagon, Anke Domaske, has high hopes for this material made from high concentrations of the milk protein. She heralds from Hanover, Germany and hopes to revolutionize the fashion industry by designing clothes made from a milk-based fabric.

Her label, Mademoiselle Chi Chi is a favorite with stars including Mischa Barton and Ashlee Simpson. Germany is once again on the forefront of the development of innovative fabrics. Time will tell if milk will provide a staple fabric as it does staple food source to many.

Its snowing in a fast horizontal furry out my studio window and I am sitting cozy inside with a cuppa joe and thick slice of homemade pumpkin pie.

My New Years resolutions never involve self restraint where the sinful indulgences are involved. A new year always does often elevate me to a state of self inventory, however. I take stock, so to speak, and often, shed excesses.

To manifest new growth I am shedding clutter - again.

Some things are harder to part with than others.

Here is my twist on a classic Pumpkin Pie - Makes 2 Pies

Ingredients

1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tsps ground cinnamon
1 tsp teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 tsp ground cardomom
1 pinch nutmeg
4 large eggs lightly beaten
2 can (15 oz.) Organic Pumpkin Puree
6 oz. Lemon Greek Yogurt
2 can (12 fl. oz.) Evaporated Milk
2 unbaked 9-inch (4-cup volume) deep-dish pie shell
Whipped cream (optional)

Directions

MIX sugar, cinnamon, salt, ginger and cloves in small bowl. Beat eggs in large bowl. Stir in pumpkin, yogurt and sugar-spice mixture. Gradually stir in evaporated milk.

POUR into prepared pie shell.

BAKE in preheated 425° F oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350° F; bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until knife inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 2 hours. Serve immediately or refrigerate. Top with whipped cream before serving.
Crust:

1 cup almonds, whole or slivered (blanched or with skins)
2 1/2 cups all-purpose unbleached flour (plus extra for working thedough)
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks)cold unsalted butter
About 1/3 cup cold water (possibly more)

MIX the almonds in the food processor and add 1/4 cup of theflour until the almonds areground to a fine powder. Add the rest of the flour and the salt,and cut the butter into the mixture. Sprinkle a clean work surface with extra flour, and turn outthe dough onto the surface. Flour your hands, and swiftly andminimally push the dough into itself, until it holds together.

Roll and to glass pie pans, and refrigerate until you are ready to finish thepie.

The term"Loft" began in New YorkCity in the 1940s when renters and owners began turningold industrial buildings into living spaces. The original tenants were artistswho craved the high ceilings, large windows and open floor plans typical ofconverted warehouses and factories. Over the last decade, many major citiesthroughout the world have begun to welcome the idea of loft living, which is away of bringing life into what were previously deserted parts of a city.

Movingfrom a woodland passive cedar treehouse to an industrial loftspace feels newand exciting and all at once I am shedding excess baggage andminimalizing. Streamlined living withone cup, one bowl, one spoon and a large pillow to sit upon is my vision butcertainly a challenge as well. I am drawing inspiration to pair back from avision board that I have created of lofts from around the world.

Will Stamps be Obsolete by 2050?

A few years ago, when my grandmother passed away, Idiscovered a tattered scrapbook tucked away in her cedar hope chest. She had saved all of the love letters betweenher and my grandfather before they were married, when he was stationedoverseas. Can you imagine using an international courier service every timeyou wanted to say ‘I love you’? Now,when my partner travels we email each other. Most epistolary relationships use the sustainability of the web tocommunicate today. But, what will ourgrandchildren find?

There won’t be yellowed letters with tear stained ink, ormusty envelopes with foreign postage. We’ll have to leave them a password to unlock our romance. The words ofour generation have been rendered immortal, hanging in the great clouds ofinformation that make up the web. The art of delicate handmade stationary andpracticed calligraphy is dwindling in favor of sustainable and expedientemail. It is a trade off.

Maybe we should all incorporate a little bit of both:personalized notes on eco friendlystationary and emails to leaveour legacy of love. I inherited a collection of vintage brooches and pins, from cameos, to owls, to holiday adornments that seem to call my name during the festive season as I search for new was to spruce up my style.

The classic way to wear a pin was at the shoulder, complemented by pearls, hat and gloves. Pins and brooches draw the eye, and placement is key.

Wearing a vintage brooch will inevitably bring back gads sharing of fond memories. I hope I have tweaked a few for you.

Brooch Ribbon 2 Tier Necklace

Silk or Satin Ribbon-1 1/2 " wide cut into 4 (24" strips), Sandpaper, Clear Nail Polish, Glue Gun, Jump Rings, Paper Towels

With your wire cutters, snap off backings to your jewelry, using the sandpaper sand down any rough edges, use clear nail polish on any sharp edge remaining.

Arrange your pieces to your liking. I used 5 brooches and 4 pairs of earrings.

Add jump rings using the needle nose pliers to connect the pieces together and finish off with ribbon. Experimentation is key to success.

I am hanging out at Cafe Mitanni these days when in Istanbul. This Taksim coffeehouse offers a cool home away from home space to chill out with a cafe americano or a glass of wine.Cafe Mitanni is owned by musician Turgay Demiryürek. Its frequented by musicians, artists and bohemians as well as expats.

The ambiance mixes antiques, vintage photography and magazines, with organic, hand-drawn cephalopods; octopus and squid. Each item is surely carefully chosen and well loved.

The house cat, Arap, is family to bookseller and neighbor, Oktay. Arap sleeps all day and I wonder if he is up all night like most of the cool cats that hang out at this hot spot.

My drink of choice is Hot Milk with Cinnamon. I also am a fan of the homemade straight-from-your-grandma's pantry recipes.

On any random night, Cafe Mitanni turns into a live music hole-in-the-wall ideal for people who are into a more funky-alternative relaxed experience. Deniz will be behind the bar ready to offer up something tasty.

I am staying in a cool musician's flat in Istanbul for a couple of weeks and surrounded by instruments galore. I always have felt most comfortable in and around music and the crafting of both the tune and the instrument are intoxicating to my soul.

Musicwood follows guitar-makers Chris Martin (Martin Guitars), Bob Taylor (Taylor Guitars), and Dave Berryman (Gibson) on their journey together to the Tongass, a remote forest in SE Alaska. Old growth Sitka Spruce trees used in creating acoustic guitar soundboards come from the Tongass, the largest temperate rain forest in the world, and they are being logged at a staggering rate. The documentary goes behind-the-scenes the battle in Alaska to preserve the Sitka Spruce, films the craftsmanship of guitar-making in the master workshops of Gibson, Martin Guitars, and Taylor Guitars, and even has some cool live acoustic guitar performances including Yo La Tengo, Turin Brakes, Glen Hansard, and Sergius Gregory.

One song is titled “Beautiful” by Dan Bremnes is a story about upcycling something old and turning it into something new. Love this message.

I am sitting here in the friendliest juice bar in Istanbul. Last time I was in this fair city I discovered Cuppa Juice bar and was charmed by the atmosphere, organic faire and cafe cat. Now I feel like its a home away from home.

This morning I started the day with a concoction of fresh fruits, veggies and herbs blended to yummy perfection, caffe americano and a platter of fresh cucumbers and baby tomatoes served with toasted homade bread and organic pesto dipping spread. I booked all of my meet ups here today, and am sitting in the southern facing open window enjoying the afternoon warmth.

The owner, Dinc Togrol is always here, and today I heard him speaking English with me, turning around and conversing in German with other guests then back to Turkish and can't help but wonder just how many languages he does speak?

The walls are a bright green and painted on the way it says (in Turkish) "All veggies and fruits are freshly squeezed with care." Located in the Cihangir neighborhood of Istanbul on Yeni Yuva, the cafe is frequented by expats, artists and cool cats of both the human and feline variety. The menu includes lots of vegetarian dishes and the kitchen is always glad to accommodate special requests.

Although a bit off the beaten path, bohemian Cihangir has long been popular among antiquarians and hipsters alike.Wandering in and around the spiderweb of cobblestone streets its easy to get lost in the sights and smells. Shopkeeps are very laid back and happy to give you a tour of their ateliers

While the area checkout Mariposa, a charming little retro-themed shop that carries a range of colorful clothing as their own line. They tailor make to order as per your design. Another great boutique, Berrin Akyuz, specializes in re-worked vintage clothing items as well as new pieces with a romantic feel. A favorite among locals, the store carries unique accessories.

Up Up and Away

Packing for a light getaway? I go by the rule of 8 – eight lucky wardrobe pieces get to travel withme and I always leave extra room in my travel case just in case I adopt a newaddition en route.

Two dresses, two skirts, one pair jeans, one sweater, one lacecamisole, one jacket are the standard selections for a trip lasting one week orlonger. Funny thing is that if I packmore, I usually stick to the core eight essentials anyway. Shoes and accessories are of course a mustaddition, and I do not go by the comfort comes first rule as let’s face it, thetrimmings make the outfit.

Many recommend rolling instead of folding. I really feel it depends on the garment. I still like hanger bags as they makeunpacking quick and easy, but must admit to rolling, folding, stuffing and evenlayering and wearing to make the carry on work for the return tour.

If you watched the dapper George Clooney in “Up in the Air”,or William Hurt in “The Accidental Traveler” you witnessed mastery at the artof packing the rolling carry on bag. For every pound of weight shed from a plane,14,000 gallons of fuel are spared per year.

Homegrown Goodness

"My Farm" won best cider in the Mid Atlantic Region this year. I call it this because I grew up on the homegrown corn, peaches, apples and beans. Indeed I can walk or ride my bike there and fill my basket full of fresh picked seasonal fare from May to November.

Shenot Farm has practiced sustainable farming, with minimal use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, since 1854. Founded by Christopher Scheno when he arrived in America in 1854, the farm has passed from father-to-son for five generations now. I know Mary Lou who runs the market and makes over 50 varieties of homemade fudge. Ed operates the farm and has the magic recipe for the award-winning apple cider. Rob, one of Mary Lou and Ed’s three children, assists with farming operations, greenhouse and irritations management.

The folks at the farm harvest strictly by hand and the careful soil management practices they follow are evident in the taste of their bounty. During harvesting they treat the pick as though it were as delicate and fragile as eggs. When there at the farm stand pickers frequently enter with freshly selected fruits and veggies to replenish the hourly offering so that everything is always perfectly just picked.

There is a lot of confusion over the true meaning behind terms like terms like “conventional”, “organic”, “biotechnology”, “IPM”, and “sustainable” when it comes to farming. The Shenots look at farming with logic and love of the land. Sustainable farming is a common-sense approach that is neither organic nor conventional as neither method leads to the best long-term use of the land instead opting for a combination of sustainable farming practices.

Beginning the last weekend in September and every weekend in October, plus Columbus Day, Shenot Farm hosts hayrides to the pumpkin patch and corn maze. What better way to spend an autumn day? Take home an acorn squash and try this recipe.

Walnut Stuffed Acorn Squash

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

Toast 1/2 cup walnuts in peanut oil and salt generously in a skillet until lightly brown

Cut acorn squash in half and scoop out the seeds

Fill each half squash with a tbsp (more or less to taste) of brown sugar and the remaining cavity with toasted walnuts

Roast in oven for about an hour

Substitutions abound. Try switching out Pecans for the Walnuts and adding dried fruit such as cranberries to the stuffing. Make each time different and you will never get bored with this autumn treat.

Vintage continues to trend withstrong influences on the runways in Milan, New York and Paris. Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Tori Burch, and Bill Blass continue to shine with looks that often harken back to simpler, more elegant times that bring a tone of nostalgia to the runway.

Over the years I have found that shoppingin upscale resale and vintage boutiques and hidden gems off the beaten path, Ican get great vintage looks in top condition. These stores include DecadesInc in LA and Jim SmileyVintage Clothing in Manhattan.

I also love to visit flea marketswhen traveling abroad for that “something something” that makes an outfitreally pop.

Our future is beingdesigned today. While searching out trendsetting eco couture knitwear for thecoming months I discovered some gems.

Irish designer, Sharon Wauchob, is now Creative Directorof Bono and Ali Hewson's ethical brand EDUN. Wauchob established a loyalfollowing within the industry for her alternative and conceptual lifestylestyle and layering to create fashion forward sustainable stylings. The majorityof Edun Apparel clothing - 80% of units manufactured - is made in Africa,specifically in Tunisia, Tanzania and Kenya, the remaining 20% is split betweenPeru and China.

Jonäno is the perfectone-stop shop for mindful and modern fashionista. The Scandinavian/Americanfashion brand Jonäno was founded in 2006 by international designer BonnieSiefers, and has, over the last years, developed into a strong ready to wear ecofashion brand in the USA and internationally.

Unraveling the Lure of the Sloppy Joe Sweater

Why do I yearn to pull over an oversized pullover? The “Sloppy Joe Sweater” – that long, baggy pullover sweater that is oft that of the opposite sex’s wardrobe begins to call my name as the leaves begin to change.

It harkens me back to crisp evening ballgames, September bonfires and ice skating on ‘Forest’ pond. I will get to the modern sweater in a later post, but first I wanted to share some fables about my favorite well-worn cables as I unpack those sweater boxes.

My grandpa Ken was an outdoorsman. We have shoeboxes of photos showing ‘Kenpa’ in all of his glory holding the big fish high in one hand, oar in the other. On his back, of course the Woolrich Sweater and camp shirt pulled over buttoned up oversized trousers.

‘ Franma’ went along on at least one of these excursions and lore has it that she gathered berries while Ken and his brother were out catching dinner. When they returned she had baked a fresh berry pie in the coals of the fire pit.

My mother had a love of sweaters, too. She had one that I loved to borrow. It was crème with blue and red accents at the neck and bands on one sleeve only. She said that the asymmetry was a designer accent. I wondered for years whether it was an accent or a mistake.

When I traveled to Europe in my teenage years I discovered the beauty of the Norwegian Cable Knit sweater. This sweater always needed to be paired with legging on me as it was and still is as over-sized as they come. The thing I love the most about my old ‘Scandi’ Pullover is that I can wear it all winter long without an overcoat. It is truly the warmest sweater I have ever worn.

Last story. We all have that oversized pullover that we keep long past its expiration date. Mine is a simple mottled Scottish Aran Sweater. I guess the Scots are not known for their sweaters for nothing. The color matches every outfit, as an Aran sweater is made from undyed natural-colored báinín yarn made from sheep's wool, sometimes "black-sheep" wool. I have mended my old favorite several times, even patching the elbows, and I feel that like so many things, it just gets better with time.

My favorite Canadian shoe guru John Fluevog announced today that Pennsylvanian artist Hollie Chantile's design submission to their Open Source Program was given the ultimate "John nod." It will be produced as their classic favorite Fluevog Miracle heel.

Hollie's shoe art won Grand Prize in 2001 at the OXO Gallery in Baltimore's juried exhibition. Her paintings merge the natural world complete with carnivorous plants and insects with that of the professional shoe designer. The result is just divinely what Carl Linnaeus might have conjured up.

The strappy heels elevate into delicate swooping curves held steadfast on hand carved wooden last, the new Miracle Hollie is made in a Peruvian factory that has a reputation for outstanding quality and craftsmanship = sustainable for certain. Miracles are the surprises of the soul.

Barbie Trades in the Pink Corvette for a Green House

Before Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, and even Jackie “O”, there was Barbie, arguably the country’s most recognizable Fashion Icon. With her countless number of clothes and large walk-in closets, Barbie quickly became the girl everyone looked to for fashion ideas, even if she was just a 13-inch doll.

As stylish as the blonde bombshell may have been, and still is, Barbie most likely is not a brand that most would first associate with eco-living, (the woman owned how many pink corvettes? Can you say gas guzzler??) however, times have changed and the doll will now reside in a home that will rival the most green buildings in the world.

AIA Architect Barbie® Dream House™ Design Competition, held by Mattel Inc. and the American Institute of Architects (AIA), selected an eco-friendly winning stunning home designed by recent Harvard graduates Ting Li and Maja Paklar.

Decked out with solar panels, operable shading and bamboo flooring, the dream house also comes with a low-flow toilet and sink fixtures, (which in real life could save about 4,000 gallons of water per year) all made from locally sourced materials.

Barbie also gets a 1,500-square-foot entertaining space and open chef’s kitchen, a separate library and client-meeting room, a full-floor “inspiration room,” a greenhouse on the roof, and a landscaped garden for her pets.

Like we needed any more reason to be jealous?

Unfortunately, Mattel has no intentions of transforming this dream house into an actual doll house or real life mansion, but it has been reported that the house would sell for $3.5 million if it were ever built into a real home.

Nonetheless and competitions aside, I can only hope that Mattel can see just how much of an impact a more sustainably-living Barbie would have. I have shared in the past just how important I feel it is for children to begin living an eco conscious lifestyle early, and with this young girl role model, Barbie, taking her first green steps I can only imagine just all of who would follow.

Functionally Sustainable Furniture

Stephen Schultz is an emerging German contemporary furniture designer for the 21st Century. Experimenting in readily available materials including recycled foam, bent steel, domestic concrete, plywood and linoleum, Schultz develops minimalistic and modular pieces that would function equally well in a commercial and residential atmosphere.

The ‘Recycled Chair Couch Sofa System’ is crafted of recycled speckled foam source material and offered in both natural as well as colorful shape options.

Quite a different perspective on the same subject is evident in Schultz’s ‘Comfy Cargo Chair’ which is said to originate from the idea to create a piece of furniture which does not predetermine the surface for the user.

The chair allows the sitter to finish the construction which consists of a bare bones bent steel frame, forming tunnels perfect for tucking pillows, books, blankets and personal items. It seems the idea of “nesting” has not escaped Schultz. Bravo!

Fresh Fashion: Square Foot for Square Feet

Earlier this year I did a series of post entitled, Fresh Fashion. The idea was to spotlight designs and designers who used their artwork to creatively change the world of fashion. During this time, I loved introducing these works to an audience that may have never been familiar to the designs had they not read it here.

So I decided why stop there. Why not continue to bring light to interesting fashion?

Chipkos, is an eco friendly sandal company based out in LA who protects 100 square feet of the rain forest for each pair of sandals that are bought. Recently the company decided to “step” things up in a big way.

Chipkos is breaking ground by releasing the world’s most expensive flip flop ever. Hand-painted by renowned Los Angeles artist, David Palmer, the collector’s item is priced at $18,000 a pair. On the up side, for each pair that is sold, Chipkos will protect 100,000 square feet of rain forest land.

While I don’t know how many individuals can afford the pricy price tag, the shoes are more targeted toward companies who are interested in making a philanthropic purchase.

I love the concept of this idea and the company in general. Along with its clever design of a more square-ish design as opposed to the round-toe that most flip flops have, the square foot shape symbolizes the square feet of rain forest the company protects.

The children may be getting ready to put away the backpacks and say their goodbyes to classmates and teachers, but just before they do, an opportunity has been presented to prepare kids and parents alike for the next school year in a very “green’ way.

Fresh Fashion Pt. 3: Finger Licking Fashion

Rounding out the top three of the series, is fashion that is closer to home than you may think. In fact most of the fabric, or should I say ingredients, is in your home as you read this.

These featured designs are fashions that serve many purposes and looks like it can be seen on the latest runway show, but can be bought at a local market.

Red Tomatoes

I have been aware of designers creating pieces that were considered edible fashion, or fashion which uses food as its predominant choice for fabric, but this designer and her designs take a very different and dare I say, normal, approach to the idea. And who would have ever thought “normal” would be so unconventional.

The designer is Korean artist, Sung Yeonju, who used everything from tomatoes to bread, to design the collection entitled ‘Wearable Foods’.

What I love most about the designs, is that they can very easily come off as looking like an assignment from a challenge on Project Runway, however they actually look like beautiful, avant-garde pieces that I can see celebrities wearing on a red carpet.

As an added bonus, many of the fruits and vegetables that were used were organically grown.

Sung has designed more traditional, wearable fashion, however, it is these designs that make me want to follow her future as she continues to grow as a designer.

Fresh Fashion Pt. 2: Techno Fashion

Like any romantic fairytale, this one is no different. Fashion met technology and technology met fashion. It was love at first sight and the two have been inseparable ever since. This story book romance has come to life in a remarkable way, now that fashion has reached the point where it can harness renewable energy.

California based company, Silvr Lining (Yes, Silvr, not Silver), includes three different brands that incorporate not only high-end fashion, but high-tech as well. Their brand GO Collection, has taken the possibilities of merging fashion and technology to new heights while still designing aesthetically pleasing merchandise.

The brand designs fashionable organic sportswear made out of animal-friendly ultra-suede with integrated solar power panels that have the capability to charge personal mobile devices.

So much for the excuse, “my phone died and I didn’t have anywhere to charge it.” All you need now is a pocket and the sun, who would have ever thought?

Their most recent design is a pair of cargo pants with a pair of built-in photovoltaic panels on two easy-access side pockets. The pants, along with most of the brand, are pretty pricey costing at $920, however, the light weight, stain resistant low-slung drawstring trouser is well before its time so the price tag isn’t as shocking as it may seem.

These designs give everything that is needed for the eco-minded, tech-savvy, fashionista; a target audience that I am unsure as to whether or not had a concrete outlet to turn to in the past.

I am constantly amazed at how fashion is evolving and the minds that are creating them as well. It really makes me want to sit back and wait to see what they come up with next, and what crazy thing will they do that time…

Fresh Fashion Pt. 1: Birds of a Feather, Walk Together?

*I am beginning a series of blog post, where I will highlight different and new designs/designers. In a time where originality can easily be stiffened by society, let’s look and applaud those who continue to break the mold and reshape it with their designs.*

One of the best things about fashion is the freedom that comes with it. There are no rules to personal style and essentially what you think is “cool” is cool.

I was recently brought to attention of an interesting, complex Israeli shoe designer by the name of Kobi Levi. It’s not so much his designs that are complex; it is his creative, innovative mind that leaves me puzzled.

One of his newest collections is a series where his inspiration comes from a rather peculiar place.

The “Bird Series” is nothing like I have ever seen before, so different, yet so…modern. It immediately made me wonder how no one has ever thought of this before.

Immediately the “Swan” stands out to me. A white pump can be stellar in most cases, however, the detail on the heel, takes a basic and transforms it into something fresh that would look great with another wardrobe staple, a little black dress.

While continuing to look through Levi’s past collections, you will constantly be amazed and see that the best part about his style is that the shoes are actually…practical and can be effortlessly mixed with the everyday girl’s closet.

Looking at his designs, I hope gives some inspiration to others to begin seeking other outlets and ideas when coming up with your next creative piece of art. Go somewhere you have never been, do something you have always wanted to do, or even go back and reassess things you may have brushed off in the past. You will be surprised with what you come up with next, who knows it may be something as close as what lies in your back yard.

Unfortunately for us, as of now, you will are unable to go to a store and pick up his creations. All of his shoes are made to order, so that requires you to “fly” some distance, however anything worth having is worth going to get.

Eco Pop Up Shop in the Big Apple

One of the newest shopping crazes is the phenomenon of the pop up shop.

Often designers bring one of a kind samples to these short but so sweet events lasting from a couple of hours to sometimes (if we are lucky) as long as a week.

There will be many, many delightful eco fashion and accessories items available for immediate sale for mindful men and women.

Sharing a Bit of Metta and More

Just back from a quick trip to the left coast and wanted to share a little bit of sunshine with you. I was in LA for a runway event to raise money for the Tsunami Relief Fund and had time out to partake in one of my favorite pastimes...chillin' at the beach.

I love the simplicity of life wave-side and the rhythm of the surf, but best of all, I really love to people watch folks that also enjoy my favorite spots. They always are wearing a friendly smile and often some cool eco fashion, too.

Dutch designer Jane Stroink is one such eco designer whose craft can be found at the hippest beaches. Jane makes beach ready recycled blankets for her company, LADAK. I have always wanted to trek through the Ladak region of India and this blanket would make the perfect sleeping mat for that journey on my own bucket list.

LADAK blankets are each unique as they are crafted of recycled sweaters, blankets, jeans and parts of mattresses. They are then ornately decorated with ribbons and rich fabrics.

Each blanket is uniquely handcrafted and machine washable but best of all, 15% of LADAK‘s profits will be donated to an Amsterdam shelter for the homeless.

Jonäno Walks For Japan and More!!

It may be hard to imagine, but what would a pre-teen award show, relief in Japan, and organic fashion have to do with one another??

In most normal circumstances the answer would be nothing, however, in happy news, the unusual mergence has resulted in Jonäno being named the official eco designer for the runaway and event, F.A.M.E Caring with Style “The Art & Spirit of Fashion”.

Spring Ahead With The Latest Trends

Yesterday marked the first day of spring, so it is about that time to put the heavy coats, hats, and gloves away and opt for something much more appropriate. But before you go and reach for your box labeled “Spring Clothes” keep in mind that this season has taken a slightly different turn and instead you may have to reach for the box that is slightly deeper in your closet because this season has taken a time trip.

The ‘60s and ‘70s have made a comeback as designs looked more to the past for inspiration. From outerwear to shoes, and everything in between, look through your old photos, but be sure to only take the good out of the past because something’s should remain where they were left.

Look for spring jackets with an A-Shape that resemble those of the Mod look in the ‘60s. The design flares away from the hips providing a subtle cover up for anyone still working on their beach body. Pair the outfit with some vintage finds like ladylike watches and large stripped totes.

Give your body a break and slip out of the skinny jeans. Don’t get rid of them for good but simply take the opportunity to easily step into some flare-leg jeans, preferably high-waisted ones. Wear these with some other in style pieces like wedge heels and oversized bangles.

As usual don’t be afraid to add color or even some prints, but don’t be surprised if you see more soft colors and nude pallets. Look for some more low-key colors as opposed to always going for the bright, vibrant options. Let your accessories stand out for you.

Overall, for the next few months take the time to enjoy the comfy look that is in this season. Gone are the body-hugging dresses and six inch heels. But as I always say style is in the eye of the beholder and never let what is “in” for that season dictate your whole style. Trends are merely suggestions and it is up for you to take your own originality and play around with some old faves and new finds.

I love to meet folks that have a similar wanderlust and love for unique yet timeless design. I'm just back from a trip to beautiful Burgos, Spain where I met David Alperin, Founder/Owner of Goose Barnacle, NYC's top rated men's specialty store.

I was impressed by GBs "store as gallery" concept; the curated shop carries Svensson, Sebago and Naked & Famous. GB doubles as an art gallery, whether it be art, clothing or handcrafted jewelry.

The shop will be hosting their Spring art opening to coincide with the seasons new apparel debut. Goose Barnacle debuts next Friday March 18, 2011, “Basement Paintings” by Neil Callander.

Described as a still-life series, “Basement Paintings” reveals objects designed for human intimacy, reflecting years of human contact. The name Goose Barnacle harkens back to Alperin’s Spanish roots, referring to a beloved Northern Spain shellfish delicacy his grandmother served him growing up.

In lieu of The Academy Awards last weekend, celebrities walked the red carpet while wearing green, celebrating Global Green USA’s 8^th Annual Pre-Oscar party. The party was held to help raise support and awareness for Global Green’s initiative to fight climate change.

Among the guest list included, Academy-Award-winning director James Cameron and wife Suzy Amis Cameron, Dennis Haysbert, Elisabeth Rohm, Enrique Murciano, James Van Der Beek, Frances Fisher, Alison Brie, as well as Oscar nominee Lucy Walker.

As much as the party is for the goal of finding alternative solutions to climate change, fashion was at the forefront, as celebrities took the evening to show off some of their best versions of “ecoCouture”.

I See London, I See Fall 2011 Fashion Preview

Kate and William, move over! London may be where you are setting up for your royal wedding, but London has taken on a whole new responsibility come this fall.

During a successful weekend at “Moda Manhattan” in New York City, Jonäno debuted a sample of what is to come for their fall 2011 collection, respectively titled London.

As is every line, the name of the line comes from some social reference that designer, Bonnie Siefers, deems appropriate for that moment. What better to call a line than arguably the most talked about city this year?

Even a few of the items are named after popular references including a trouser named “Amelia” after Amelia Earhart, because of its aviator style design. The soon-to-be princess even is the namesake for an organic cotton velvet and veggie tanned leather skirt, symbolizing the one that Kate wore when she met her prince.

The line takes what they are known for, organic and eco-friendly material including organic wool blends, veggie tanned leather, and more, and elevates it to high extremes by incorporating bold prints, daring cuts, and a flare of vintage appeal.

The color pallet varies, with a lot of soft blacks and glacier grays and a few pieces available in amethyst purple and indigo blue to add a pop.

There are some early favorites that stand out, most which are made from chenille lace. This alternative to regular lace has a softer feel, guaranteed to combat the roughness that lace can leave on the skin. One of the many more risqué pieces is a body suit made from the material, which is guaranteed to turn heads.

It seems as if the material, wild peace silk, is the standout in the line. Pants, skirts, tops and dresses all have a few that are designed from the silk which is naturally derived as opposed to commercial silk.

"Feminine" Fashion Trend

Trends in the fashion world come and go. What is hot one day may be a fashion faux pas the very next. However, the latest fashion trend is not a daring color that every designer is incorporating in their line, or a new style of handbag, but instead designers are taking risks and joining part in what is being called the “femiman” trend.

For the past three seasons, designers have been abandoning the idea of males and females staying within their particular gender roles and have begun to incorporate models that fit more of an androgynous style and model in both male and female garments.

Probably the most popular, Lea T. graced the Fall/Winter 2010 ad campaign for Givenchy, lighting the fashion world a buzz. I recall hearing about Riccardo Tisci’s latest muse and seeing the images on various news programs and magazines, questioning if this was the future for fashion.

A year later, I would have to say…yes! Fashion is more than just clothing or self-expression; it is a way of life. And as we all know, in the world of fashion, life imitates art. Within in the fashion world, there has always been a very progressive state of mind and whether it took time or not, the rest of the world eventually caught up.

Earlier this year, a young Serbian boy by the name of Andrej Pejic, strutted the runway at Jean-Paul Gaultier’s spring 2011 couture show, closing it dressed in a gorgeous wedding gown. Since then, Pejic has been named as the face of Marc Jacob’s spring 2011 campaign and has gone on to also walk in Gaultier’s men’s line for Paris Fashion week.

Designers and model’s alike seem to be embracing the idea of this fluidity within the relationship between gender and fashion and it now poses the question of how long until this idea walks right off of the runway and into everyday life. I suppose only time will tell if this unconventional style will soon become the norm for designers, and even more so for the fashion-goers all around, both male and female.

Emma Debuts Eco-Line

It seems that nowadays for an entertainer, being a “triple threat” has taken on a whole new meaning. Gone are the days where being able to dance, sing, and act were all it took to earn major kudos. Instead, celebrities from every medium are trying their best Donald Trump impersonation and becoming business moguls.

Next to join the growing list is star of the Harry Potter franchises, Emma Watson, who will be a debuting an organic clothing line this spring.

After working on a successful eco-friendly line with fashion company, People Tree, she has decided to branch off and design her own line with fame designer Alberta Ferretti.

The line, whose name has yet to be revealed, is said to be inspired by some of her favorite classic 60’s film actresses.

Watching the young starlet grow beyond our eyes has been a joy and she has done so gracefully in front of the cameras. Overtime she has stepped into her own as a growing fashion princess and while doing so, has always made public support of organic and green living.

I have to admit I am always a little leery when stars decide to add fashion designer to their belt, because I often believe that they are simply putting their name on it and question how involved they really are. However, I have a feeling this will not be the case.

There is a new socially responsible condom on the market, and by the way, that little pocket on the front of the jeans is commonly known as a condom pocket. What I learned in Brownies and Girlscouts...be prepared, has served me well over the years.

Let’s face it; birth control is complicated, and definitely not stylish. The Pill liberated women since the early sixties, but also shifted the burden to the softer sex, and does not protect against nasty STDS. A few days ago I failed to purchase a piece of wearable art while traveling abroad in a trendy part of Istanbul. It was a stunning architectural purplish grey silk tunic with patches of the thinnest leather I have ever touched…like butter really, however the piece was slightly out of my travel budget. It was also one of those pieces I would probably only wear two or three times a year, though these would have been events to remember, I’m sure, and for me what I wear lends part to how I experience events and interact with the world. It was to die for and I terribly regret not buying it.

The thing is, if not born to money, it usually takes us some time to realize that good clothes are worth investing in, even if more expensive, and by good I mean well made, but also original, timeless, art-like. This is a real part of sustainable style, for classic and timeless art pieces that are well made are wardrobe investments.

These pieces delight us when we buy them, and continue to bring joy to us as we recall the occasion when we found the piece and the events to where we wore the garment. As a fashion enthusiast, I am passionate about collecting textiles and fashion, and although I did not make an investment on my recent trip to Turkey, my philosophy is Life is Long and more opportunities lie just ahead.

Charlotte Hosten’s hand crafted necklaces are anything but supplementary. These show piece necklaces have enough drama and flair to be the eye-catcher of any look.

Charlotte Hosten is a Belgium born accessories designer who now lives and creates in Montreal, Canada. Hosten combines beads and other materials with fabric and ribbon to create beautiful necklaces that are meant to be worn as a garment rather then an accessory. This idea of creating an “accessory garment” came to Hosten after she found that regular clasps weren’t sturdy enough for her exaggerated pieces. She solved this problem by sewing the beads to scraps ribbon and fabric. The fabric only added to the creativity of her jewelry, allowing her pieces to come to life. Now, Hosten makes several different lines of jewelry including, Bridal Couture, Haute Couture, Pret A Porter, and Custom Made, all using her unique jewelry/fabric technique.

She also uses vintage elements in her jewelry to give the antique materials a “second life”. Along with utilizing these second hand materials, she also recycles all of the used fabrics and scraps to be used later, in order to minimize the impact on the environment. The Sari collection, featured on Hostens web page showcases jewelry that has been made entirely out of these scraps and vintage items.

Disappearing Wedding Gown

Go from the wedding reception to the honeymoon without ever changing your clothes!

An unlikely collaboration between engineering and fashion design students at the Sheffield Hallam University resulted in a matrimonial eco statement.

The students worked together to create a dissolvable wedding gown that completely defys our more traditional notions of the "white dress". The gown can be transformed into five different pieces. The initial full white dress goes through each stage becoming slimmer and more formfitting until it finally becomes a bodice lingerie piece. The five different dresses are currently on display at the University’s Furnival Gallery.

The dissolvable wedding gowns were created in response to the growing number of clothes being placed in landfills. Due to the ever changing fashion industry and the growth of “value retailers” the price of clothing in the UK has decreased 25%, resulting in a 40% increase in the amount of clothing purchased each year. Needless to say, clothing has become one of the UK’s largest waste products. Almost 74% of the two million tons of clothes bought every year ends up in landfills.

"The project is a union between art and technology which explores the possibilities of using alternative materials for our clothing. The wedding gown is perhaps one of the most iconic and symbolic garments in humanity's wardrobe and represents the challenges of 'throwaway fashion'.

"In order to reduce fashion's impact on the environment, the fashion industry must begin to challenge conventional attitudes and practices. The exhibition demonstrates what could be possible when design and scientific innovation combine forces." ~Jane Blohm, a lecturer from the Sheffield Hallam University.

Color To Dye For

Rubber band tied, hand tied, wax batik, warp resist, stitch resist and more...There are lots of ways to get the look of tie dye but all forms have one thing in common - some sort of resist is used.

Opening July, 31st - January 9th 2011 you can learn all about the history of tie dye at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s de Young Museum, “To Dye For,”exhibit, features over 50 textiles and costumes from the Fine Arts Museums’ comprehensive collection of textiles from Africa, Asia and the Americas. “To Dye For" not only highlights the museum’s impressive permanent collection of textiles, but also shows how cultures across the world have used similar techniques for centuries with results that are sometimes similar, and at other times startlingly different.

Lunatic Art

Earlier this week I came across a wonderful jewelry designer on Etsy (where else) while I was searching for double finger rings. The accessories line is called Lunatic Art. I was immediately drawn to the natural, hammered look of the jewelry and their unique shapes and designs. The way in which the metal is shaped looks very artistic and organic, perfect for a more casual outfit, while also bringing some edginess to a very sophisticated look. There is a wide selection of earrings and rings all carrying the signature Lunatic Art style. Each piece looks very unique to the line and you would be hard pressed to find in a store. Some of my favorites are the Scratch Duo Ring and the Crop Circle Earrings.

Lunatic art’s founder has a very interesting tale. She started making jewelry throughout her travels as a means to survive and experience the world. Though she is mostly self taught, she also learned to make her jewelry by taking a silversmith course at the “Escuela de Artes Plasticas” in Taxco, Mexico. Currently she lives with her husband and son in Paris, France using her many experiences to create beautiful jewelry. She also works and creates in an art gallery funded by her husband called “Goutte de Terre” where the profits go to finance a project of an ONG working with water access problems. She also recently started selling another line of jewelry on Etsy called Dmetal. The Dmetal jewelry is slightly trendier with chain harnesses and arm jewelry. The pieces would be perfect with a simple dress for a night out on the town.

Lunatic art jewelry is all made from recycled silver. Each piece of jewelry is created with metals from a refiner who refrains from purchasing the metal from mines. The sterling silver she uses is also either recycled or refined in order to avoid new mining. All the pieces are unique, beautiful, and completely eco-friendly.

While I was writing my last blog post about the Tecbor rubber, I became very skeptical of whether this process was truly eco-friendly. I have always been taught that producing rubber and plastic was one of the most harmful processes to the environment. If this technology is really "out there" why isn't being used all the time? So, I decided to do a little bit of research. This is what I found.

Tecbor is a new type of eco-friendly rubber made and produced in the Brazilian Amazon. The eco-friendly process of congealing the rubber without the harmful chemicals was first invented by Professor Floriano Pastore at the University of Brasilia Latex Laboratory. The key ingredient in this new technology is pyroligenous acid which is used to produce the rubber sheets. Before this technology the only way of coagulating the latex material was through acetic acid in combination with a substance derived from wood smoke. Also. this new process cuts the stages of grinding and rinsing, which in the past, used a large amount of water and electricity. The rubber tappers are able to dry the latex panels outside which saves a lot of energy.

Greenpeace, an environmentalist and peace associated organization, has collaborated with 40 rubber tapping families in the Jurua Valley, an extractive reserve in the amazon, to launch The Amazon Tecbor Project sponsored by the University of Brasilia, the National Council of Rubber Tappers, and the National Centre of Traditional Populations. Greenpeace chose this location for the pilot phase of the project because the region faces the threat of large scale logging operations. Greenpeace along with it's collaborators use this project as an example to prove that the rain forests can be economically useful while they're alive. The rubber produced during the first phase of this project was used by Greenpeace to produce completely eco-friendly mouse pads.

Using this process to produce rubber has also helped the small, native rubber tapping communities in the Amazon. The people of these communities have taken the technology and adapted it to their own practices in order to improve the rubber making process. The Brazilian rubber tappers are able to produce the rubber sheets on their own, eliminating the middlemen, which directly helps the residents of these communities.

Despite my initial skepticism, I have been completely converted after doing the research on Tecbor. It's a wonderful new technology that helps us use the rich resources of the rain forest without destroying it. Also, this technology helps the smaller communities rather then the large rubber producing companies. This research has also given me a new appreciation of Flavia Amadeu's rubber bracelets. She has found a way to make this new rubber stylish and fashionable.
